How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the material is 20 gauge or thinner using a caliper and note actual thickness on the BOL to align with NMFC 60180.
- Match packaging to risk: banded bundles on skids for sturdier pieces, heavy boxes with edge guards for smaller cuts, or braced crates for larger panels.
- Prevent bending and scuffing by interleaving sheets with paper/film, adding corner and edge protectors, and using banding with protective pads.
- Palletize to avoid overhang, mark “Do Not Bend/Edge Sensitive,” and specify NMFC 60180 with the chosen packaging type (loose, boxed, or crated).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Selecting the correct class within the 100–300 range minimizes reclass fees and inspection delays.
- Upgrading from loose to boxed or crated reduces damage risk and can improve overall landed cost despite packaging spend.
- Clear NMFC 60180 notation and precise packaging details drive faster quotes and smoother carrier acceptance.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines documentation and accelerates tendering in standard LTL networks.
