How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle nested flats tightly with stretch wrap and 2–3 straps; add a top cap and corner boards to prevent crush damage and top-loading.
- Keep units dry—pulpboard absorbs moisture. Use poly bag liners or full shrink overwrap when routing through humid or refrigerated lanes.
- Palletize on 48x40 with no overhang; cap height around 54–60 inches to avoid leaning and cubic-capacity surcharges; mark Do Not Stack if uncapped.
- If shipping inside filled egg cases, confirm cartons are fully loaded so flats don’t shift; list NMFC 60340 Class 55 on the BOL for clean inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 removes density math, streamlines quoting, and reduces reclass fees.
- Bulky, lightweight flats consolidate well in LTL, improving cube use and lowering cost per unit.
- Non-hazardous status accelerates tendering and limits special-handling accessorials.
- Explicit NMFC 60340 labeling improves carrier acceptance and minimizes inspection delays.
