How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the fit: this article applies to pole-mounted platforms or seats used by utility, telecom, or linework crews. Note material (aluminum, steel, composite) and any insulation features.
- Choose protective packaging based on finish and hardware: wrap edges with foam or corrugate, bag bolts and clamps, and ship as boxed or crated units when loose parts are included.
- Palletize awkward shapes: strap assemblies to a 48x40 pallet with edge protectors, add blocking to stop roll or tip, and keep the center of gravity low to prevent shifts in transit.
- Document clearly: list materials, count, and accessories, mark as non-hazardous, include photos and exact dims/weight, and state “Pole Platforms or Seats (NOI)” to align with NMFC 62700.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NOI selection for pole platforms/seats cuts reclass risk and avoids surprise rebills or inspections.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and keeps administrative overhead low.
- Proper palletization of irregular brackets reduces handling time and damage claims, protecting field equipment budgets.
- Standardized 48x40 footprints and consolidated hardware kits improve trailer utilization and stabilize LTL freight rates.
