How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle KD-flat components: band legs and frames together, bag all fasteners, and wrap the bundle so pieces stay flat and aligned during LTL handling.
- Separate steel from wood with corrugated sheets or foam to prevent abrasion; add corner/edge protectors on steel parts to stop strap crush and scuffs.
- If palletizing is required, keep bundles flat on a sturdy skid, band in two directions, limit stack height to prevent bowing, and mark Do Not Stack if needed.
- List on the BOL: “NMFC 66080 – Stands, poultry feeder or waterer, KD flat, in packages – Class 85,” and note material mix (steel, wood, or combined) for clean inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 removes density math, making quotes faster and reducing reclass risk.
- Space efficiency: KD-flat packaging improves trailer cube and can lower per-unit freight costs on multi-carton shipments.
- Wider carrier access: non-hazardous agricultural equipment typically avoids hazmat fees and enables flexible routing.
- Fewer claims and touchpoints: durable, banded bundles reduce OS&D, speeding cross-docks and farm supply deliveries.
