How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item matches the listing: interlocking file units with double fiberboard walls and die-cast metal ends; review NMFC Note 68862 for any special provisions.
- Protect the metal ends to prevent punctures: cap each end with foam or corrugated guards, then overwrap with kraft or bubble before placing in a sturdy master carton.
- Palletize with the metal ends facing inward toward the pallet center, use corner posts and a top cap, and secure with stretch wrap plus two cross straps for LTL.
- Declare NMFC 68860, Class 85, non-hazardous on the BOL and list piece counts by carton or bundle to reduce reclass or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating and yields predictable LTL quotes without density calculations.
- Proper end protection minimizes puncture damage and claim costs tied to the die-cast edges.
- Interlocking design can nest or align tightly, improving pallet cube and reducing transportation spend per unit.
- Accurate NMFC usage prevents reclass fees and streamlines carrier acceptance across office supply and records-archiving distribution.
