How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship only as packaged product—bundle stacks of wooden partitions or fillers inside cartons, then palletize; loose pieces don’t fit this entry.
- Identify the product clearly on the BOL (e.g., “wooden packing partitions, NOI, in packages”) and note count of cartons to support the 60–100 class range.
- Stabilize cartons with corner boards and stretch wrap so narrow, flat parts don’t shift; beverage bottlers often ship flat sets in 40x48 pallets for safe handling.
- Exporting? If the wood is solid, confirm ISPM 15 compliance and markings to avoid holds; add treatment details in documents when applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC alignment reduces reclass and inspection fees on shipments of wood dividers and inserts.
- Two-class entry (60–100) lets you quote accurately for budget control; documenting packaging helps secure the lower applicable class.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and speeds tendering with fewer special handling charges.
- Cartonized, pallet-ready parts stack cleanly, lowering damage risk and minimizing accessorials tied to loose or awkward freight.
