How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose double-wall or triple-wall corrugated boxes sized to the cast; suspend with foam-in-place, molded inserts, or urethane blocks to protect brittle plaster or cement edges.
- Palletize boxed pieces to prevent handling damage; keep all cartons within the pallet footprint, add corner boards and a top cap, and mark Fragile and This Side Up.
- State NMFC 76000, Class 85 on the BOL with the description “Fossil casts or reproductions, cement/plaster, boxed” to minimize reclass or inspection delays.
- Do not rate by density—the class is fixed. Check for accessorials like liftgate or limited access when delivering to museums, schools, or traveling exhibits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and budgeting for museums, universities, and education suppliers.
- Fewer compliance hurdles: Non-hazardous commodity means no hazmat paperwork or fees, accelerating pickup and transit.
- Lower reclass risk: Clear boxed-packaging expectation aligns with the listing and reduces rebills from inspections.
- Reduced claims: Proper internal bracing and palletization protect delicate replicas, preserving timelines for exhibits and classes.
