How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack frames KD in sturdy packages—cartons, wrapped bundles, or light crates—with foam or corrugated pads on edges and corners.
- Bundle long members (stiles, rails) by size and label each package with show/set ID and piece count to speed receiving at the venue or shop.
- For touring or rental houses, strap packaged bundles to a pallet to prevent shift during cross-dock handling; add “Do Not Fork Here” corner tags.
- Include a small hardware packet (gussets, screws) inside the package or in a clearly marked accessory box to keep sets complete.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting—no density calculation, faster tenders for set shops and production managers.
- KD packaging lowers cube and damage risk, cutting accessorials and claim exposure during hectic load-ins and load-outs.
- Non-hazardous status reduces carrier restrictions and widens carrier options for tight show schedules.
- Clear, package-based classification streamlines multi-stop LTL moves between fabrication, rehearsal, and performance venues.
