How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- When quoting, select NMFC 77880 at Class 85 for “Eggplant, in boxes or crates.” The commodity is single-rated, so no density math; include pallet weight and count.
- Use vented produce cartons or rigid crates with breathable liners. Leave headspace to prevent stem punctures, and add a top cap plus corner boards for cross-dock protection.
- Palletize on 40x48 with interlocking layers to ~48–60 in height. Strap with poly, then stretch-wrap using a ventilation pattern to avoid heat buildup; mark “Fresh Produce—Do Not Crush.”
- Request reefer service around 50–54°F; avoid sub-46°F exposure to reduce chilling injury. Book early-week pickups to minimize weekend dwell and keep quality high.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 85 removes density calculations, making LTL rate shopping faster and more consistent across carriers.
- Lower OS&D risk: Boxes or crates with reinforced bracing reduce bruising and shrink, cutting claims and regrade costs.
- Smoother operations: Non-hazardous food freight and standardized packaging speed paperwork, approvals, and tender-to-pickup times.
- Better consolidation: Fits fresh produce group moves, enabling co-loads with other vegetables for improved lane pricing and capacity.
