How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Fit each cutter with a blade sheath or tip guard, bundle 3–6 together to prevent shifting, and pack in corrugated cartons with dividers and void fill.
- Mark cartons “Weed Cutters – Hand Tools.” Put NMFC 8040 and Class 85 on the BOL, and select “packages” as the packaging type when quoting.
- Palletize cartons on 48x40 or 48x42 pallets, keep handles oriented inward, add edge boards, strap and stretch-wrap; keep stack height under 60 inches.
- Aim for manageable carton weights (35–50 lb). Example: 24 cutters with sheaths in a double‑wall 51 ECT box to resist punctures from blade edges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating speeds rate shopping and eliminates density calculations, lowering reclass risk.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and fees, opening access to more carrier options.
- Damage reduction through blade guards and sturdy cartons cuts OS&D claims and post‑delivery costs.
- Group alignment with other hand ag implements simplifies SKU consolidation and improves pallet efficiency.
