How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Apply blade guards or corrugated edge protectors over the steel cutting head, wrap handles, and box each edger or small sets before palletizing to prevent punctures.
- Use the “in packages” method: carton, bundle, or crate items so no metal edges can protrude. Strap cartons to a pallet with corner boards to keep boxes square.
- Note the fixed Class 85 on the BOL and reference NMFC 8090; no density calculation is required, simplifying rating and preventing reclass disputes.
- Moisture-proof where possible—bag or sleeve each tool and add a top slip sheet. Example: 12 edgers per 48x40 pallet, two layers with dividers and stretch wrap.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85 makes rate shopping straightforward and reduces surprises at billing.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and speeds tendering, with fewer carrier restrictions or surcharges.
- Correct NMFC 8090 on the BOL helps avoid reclass fees and cuts claim risk when paired with blade protection and sturdy cartons.
- Fits the Agricultural Implements, Hand group, aiding consolidation of similar lawn and garden tools for efficient LTL moves.
