NMFC Description Class
8430.00 Pruners, tree, NOI, other than power operated:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State on the BOL: “Pruners, tree, NOI, other than power operated,” and note count, packaging (carton, tube, bundle), and the longest piece length.
  2. Guard blades with tip protectors or cardboard sheaths, zip-tie the jaws closed, and wrap handles so nothing protrudes to puncture cartons or other freight.
  3. For pole pruners and long-handled styles, use heavy-duty fiber tubes or rectangular long boxes with end caps; over 96 inches, strap to a pallet to prevent flexing.
  4. Bundle identical units with separators, then shrink-wrap to a backer board or pallet; label “Sharp Tools – Handle With Care” for safer dock handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Clear non-powered designation reduces reclass risk and supports accurate quotes compared to powered trimmers.
  • Protective packaging and blade guards cut claim exposure, keeping OS&D costs low and customer deliveries on schedule.
  • Uniform bundling and palletization minimize handling time, helping avoid oversize or special handling accessorials on long pieces.
  • Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and simplifies paperwork, improving tender-to-pickup cycle time.
